“On a trip to Bali, I became enamored with the colorful batiks I witnessed the artisans make. The artistry reminded me of my country and the handcrafts I grew up with. I had an old neighbor who would make drums and baskets. It helped to cheer me up when I was feeling lost.

I am from Somalia and when I came to the United States over 20 years ago, I could not even speak English. Yet, I wanted to bring color and brightness to the people around me. That’s why I started to sell — my products are so colorful, it cheers me up and I know it cheers other people up too.

All my products are handmade and sourced from small business owners I know from my hometown and my travels. I buy from old friends and relatives who make them across Africa and artisans I know from across Asia.”
